The Patricia Behring
Teacher of the Year Award

The Kennth E. Behring AwardThe Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award recognizes outstanding NHD educators. Each affiliate selects a junior- and senior-division recipient, who receive a $500 cash prize. The names of these individuals are advanced for competition at the national level. Junior- and senior-division winners of the national Behring Award each receive $10,000.

2011 Recipients

Senior Level

Suzanne Bates-Miranda
F. W. Springstead High School, Spring Hill (Hernando)

Ms. Bates-Miranda teaches ninth- and tenth-grade world history and AP European history at F. W. Springstead High School. She has participated in FHF for fourteen years.

Junior Level

Christine Sermons
Merritt Brown Middle School, Panama City (Bay)

Ms. Sermons teaches eighth-grade U.S. history at Merritt Brown Middle School. She has participated in FHF for eighteen years.

Selection Criteria

  • A minimum of six years of classroom experience with National History Day.
  • A documented commitment to student-led historical research
  • Evidence of creativity in the classroom that exceeds expected participation in NHD

Supporting materials

  1. Nominee's resume (1 page)
  2. Testimonial about the impact of NHD on a class or individual student (2-3 pages)
  3. Three letters of support by individuals who know the nominee well and can give examples of excellence in history teaching.

All state winners are finalists for the national prizes. The nomination packet will be submitted for the state winners to the national office. The national winners of the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award, at the junior and senior levels, will each receive a $10,000 cash award.

Applications must be mailed or faxed to the FHF State Coordinator by March 16, 2012.
